Scientists from the Universities of Sheffield and Bradford, and LVPEI created a Smart Contact Lens
Published 19th December 2022
A team of scientists from the University of Sheffield, University of Bradford and LVPEI have developed a smart contact lens that would test eye infections in a quick and non-invasive way. Eye infections – microbial keratitis are a major cause of vision loss and blindness worldwide and more so in developing countries. Timely and correct diagnosis can facilitate the timely initiation of therapy with appropriate drugs and thereby limit vision loss from these disorders. The currently practised diagnosis method is invasive, time-consuming, and expensive. This innovation has been hailed as the next big leap in the global fight against preventable blindness and could also prevent deaths caused by fungal eye infections in the developing countries. It is hoped that this lens could be available for use at home shortly.
