Many dignitaries assembled at LVPEI’s Kode Venkatadri Chowdary campus in Tadigadapa to celebrate the inauguration of the 'Smt K Suryanarayanamma & Dr K V Prasad Centre for Elderly Eye Care'. This centre, established through the generous support of Sandhya Marines Limited, Visakhapatnam, is dedicated exclusively to the eye health and overall well-being of India’s rapidly growing elderly population.

The inauguration was graced by the donor’s family Mr and Mrs Anand Kumar Kondragunta, Head of Sandhya Marines Limited, and his father Dr K V Prasad; Chief Guest Smt Kasaraneni Damayanthi (Retd IAS); Dr Anasua Kapoor, Campus Head, LVPEI KVC Campus, Vijayawada; Dr G N Rao, Founder-Chairman, LVPEI; Dr Avinash Pathengay, Network In-charge, Centres for Elderly Eye Care, and other distinguished dignitaries.

With India’s elderly population projected to rise sharply from 10% in 2020 to 19% by 2050, there is an urgent need for targeted care. Older adults are increasingly affected by age-related vision problems and other health issues, impacting their independence and quality of life.

The new centre in Vijaywada offers a comprehensive, world-class facility adopting a holistic, integrated approach to healthy aging, in alignment with the World Health Organization’s UN Decade of Healthy Ageing action points, including combating ageism, promoting elder-friendly environments, integrated care (ICOPE), and long-term support.

Key features of the Centre Include:
      -  Specialized geriatric eye care: Eye care as a first-line screening tool for conditions such as cognitive decline, mobility issues, malnutrition, hearing loss, depression, and of course, vision health.
      -  Prioritized patient journey: Pre-visit triage via telephonic screening and a dedicated flagging system in LVPEI’s Electronic Medical Records (EMR) for timely, prioritized care.
      -  Trained geriatric professionals: Specially trained staff providing assistance and support throughout the patient visit in a friendly and respectful manner.
      -  Elderly-friendly infrastructure: Hospital and waiting areas designed to optimize safety and comfort for seniors.
      -  Education and awareness: Interactive sessions during visits to promote healthy and safe aging practices.
      -  Teleconsultation and home screening: Services for patients unable to visit the centre, delivered by trained healthcare professionals directly at their homes.

The establishment of the ‘Smt K Suryanarayanamma & Dr K V Prasad Centre for Elderly Eye Care’ marks a milestone in advancing the health and independence of India’s elderly--serving as a model for holistic, patient-centric care.
