Biography

Dr Mudit Tyagi is the Head of the Smt Kanuri Santhamma Centre for Vitreo-Retinal Diseases at LVPEI.

He did his early medical training from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, and his ophthalmology residency from B J Medical College, Ahmedabad, followed by a long-term clinical fellowship in retina and vitreous from LVPEI.

Dr Tyagi is an astute clinician and skilful surgeon, mainly working on areas like complex retinal detachments, macular holes, and uveitis. He has developed an innovative surgical technique of retinal detachment and macular hole surgery called GUARD (glue-assisted retinopexy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachments) that enables an early visual recovery and doesn’t require strict post-operative positioning.

This is especially beneficial for elderly patients and those with spinal and other orthopedic ailments. The technique, developed at LVPEI, was recognized as the Best Surgical Innovation of the Year 2019 by the Vitreo-Retinal Society of India and as the best ophthalmic innovation by the All India Ophthalmology Society in 2023.

Dr Tyagi was honored with the 2024 Kreissig Award for Excellence in Retinal Surgery by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) for his research in exploring the role of fibrin glue in vitreoretinal surgeries. He is the recipient of the Honor Award and Achievement Award from the prestigious American Society for Retina Specialists (ASRS). He has also received numerous other awards and recognitions throughout his career and is a member of several academic societies.

He has over 150 scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals and serves as a reviewer for reputed journals like Ocular Immunology and Inflammation, Journal of Ocular Inflammation and Infection, BMC Ophthalmology, International Ophthalmology, Retina, Scientific Reports, European Journal of Ophthalmology, and Indian Journal of Ophthalmology.

When not pursuing retina, he enjoys travelling with his family and is also an avid bibliophile and a history enthusiast.
