Swapna Shanbhag completed her basic medical education from Grant Medical College and JJ Hospital, Mumbai and then pursued a residency in Ophthalmology at the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Ahmedabad. She subsequently completed a two year fellowship in Cornea and Anterior segment at LVPEI, Hyderabad and then pursued a two year research fellowship in Ocular Surface diseases (ocular chemical burns/SJS) at Massachusetts Eye and Ear affiliated to Harvard University, Boston, USA.
Her main areas of clinical interest include cataract surgeries, corneal transplants (PK/DALK/DSAEK) and surgeries involving stem cells of the cornea (SLET) and artificial corneal transplantation (keratoprosthesis). Her research focuses on reducing the incidence and morbidity related to corneal blindness secondary to corneal chemical burns and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)/toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). She has published her research in international journals and has also presented at national and international meetings and has won awards for her research. She is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).
