Biography
Dr Swathi Kaliki is an internationally recognized Ocular Oncologist. She currently heads the Operation Eyesight Universal Institute for Eye Cancer and the Ophthalmic Plastic Services at the LV Prasad Eye Institute, India. She completed her primary medical education from Rajiv Gandhi University of Medical Sciences, Bangalore, and MS Ophthalmology from NTR University of Health Sciences, Hyderabad.
She completed her fellowship in Oculoplasty at the LV Prasad Eye Institute in 2010. She was then trained in Ocular Oncology by world leaders of the field, Dr Jerry Shields and Dr Carol Shields, Wills Eye Institute, Philadelphia, USA, in 2011. The following year, she trained in Ocular pathology under world-renowned ocular pathologist Dr Ralph Eagle Jr. at the Wills Eye Institute, Philadelphia, USA. She then joined as a faculty at LV Prasad Eye Institute in 2013.
Dr Kaliki is the recipient of many prestigious awards including the ICMR-Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize, ICMR Novartis Oration award, Smt Puspa Das Memorial Oration Award 2019, AAO achievement, APAO achievement, IAPB
Vision Excellence, 2025 Asia-Pacific 100 award, and ARVO 2025 Ludwig von Sallmann Clinician-Scientist Award. In 2018, she served as a mentor for retinoblastoma activities in Nairobi under the grant received from Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, and continues to be associated with the International RB-NET program. She plays a key role in several Global Leadership Committees, including BCSC Committee of AAO, AMPC of ARVO, Membership committee of ISOO, Expert panel of AJCC Classification, and the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer.
She is also the brain behind ‘Whitathon’, an annual running event creating awareness about retinoblastoma and raising funds to support the treatment of children from financially distressed families with this deadly eye cancer. It has been an annual event since its inception in 2018.
Dr Kaliki has extensively contributed to research in the field of ocular oncology. Description of the new condition, nodulo-ulcerative ocular surface squamous neoplasia, is one such contribution. Her areas of research interest include retinoblastoma, ocular surface squamous neoplasia, sebaceous gland carcinoma, and other ocular and periocular tumors. She is the section editor and reviewer for three international journals.
Dr Kaliki has to her credit over 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has delivered 300 conference lectures, including many keynote addresses. She has conducted 50 instructional courses and has been honored with over 25 national and international awards.
