10 Years of the Godavarthi Satyanarayana Murthy Eye Centre, Kapileswarapuram

The Godavarthi Satyanarayana Murthy Eye Centre in Kapileswarapuram, Dr B R Ambedkar Konaseema District, has completed a decade as a Secondary Eye Care Centre of the L V Prasad Eye Institute! This marks ten years of LVPEI bringing comprehensive eye care closer to the Konaseema region.
The centre began in 2011 as a modest Vision Centre, established through community support and the leadership of Sri G V B Chowdary garu (Surya Charitable Trust) and Dr V Rammohan Rao. It began surgical care in February 2014 with visiting ophthalmologists from the Tertiary Centre in Vijayawada, the Kode Venkatadri Chowdary Campus, and became a full Secondary Eye Care Centre on 27 August 2016, following a further donation from Sri Chowdary in memory of his father. Its network of 11 connected Vision Centres has grown with support from GEF India, Standard Chartered Bank, Sandeep Charitable Trust, Sri Namala Purushottama Rao, and the Gram Panchayat, Yeditha.
Over ten years, the centre has delivered 111,478 outpatient consultations and 12,064 surgeries, 60% free, alongside subspecialty care in cornea, retina, and oculoplasty. Its Vision Centres have provided 92,913 free eye exams, while outreach has screened 182,537 people and supported 855 through rehabilitation and low-vision care. Since July 2025, the mobile van, Pashyantu has served 1,814 people.
Flagship efforts include the GEMINI RISE project, the 2025 RAVI study, which found 11% visual impairment prevalence regionally, and SEVA EVolVE, focused on children’s eye health.
This milestone belongs to every partner and donor whose generosity carried this centre from one vision centre to a decade of rural eye care.
