Seven students from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani campuses completed their internships at the L V Prasad Eye Institute’s (LVPEI) Kallam Anji Reddy (KAR) Campus in Hyderabad.

The two-month program brought together five students from the BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus and two from the BITS Pilani campus to work on cross-disciplinary healthcare solutions.

Under the guidance of LVPEI mentors Dr Ruby Kala Prakasam, Dr Padmaja Kumari Rani, Dr Premnandhini Satgunam, and Dr Srinivas Marmamula, the interns undertook research bridging technology, sustainability, AI, and public health in eye care. Key project areas included:

  • AI & Clinical Training: Assessing the impact of prompt engineering on reflecting clinical etiquette and professional behavior among optometry students.
  • Sustainability in Healthcare: Developing a tailored carbon footprint calculation framework for traditional ophthalmology and tele-ophthalmology services.
  • Vision Technology: Standardizing calibration protocols for eye-tracking devices, and
  • Community Health: Public health research analyzing vision impairment across local communities.

The internship culminated in July with the students formally presenting their key findings and deliverables under the guidance of Prof Niranjan Swain.
