Biography
Dr Rashmi Deshmukh completed her MBBS from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, winning the Chancellor’s Award for outstanding academic performance. She later pursued her MS in Ophthalmology at JIPMER, Pondicherry, where she received the University Gold Medal for the best resident.
She developed an interest in refractive surgery and cornea while being an international scholar at the Wills Eye Hospital, USA, following which she then pursued a two-year fellowship in refractive surgery, cornea, and cataract surgery at Narayana Nethralaya, Bangalore.
She was on the faculty of the Centre for Sight, New Delhi, for two years before she was selected for a clinical and research fellowship program in cornea and ocular surface at the University of Nottingham. Subsequently, she pursued a senior clinical fellowship in cornea and cataract at the Cambridge University Hospitals. She also holds a Diplomate of the National Board (DNB) and an AIOS FAICO in refractive surgery.
Dr Deshmukh is keen on academics and translational research, with a focus on refractive surgery, corneal ectatic disorders, and corneal imaging. She has published over 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts and several book chapters. Apart from being an active reviewer for international journals, she is also an Assistant Editor for the Refractive Surgery and Cornea segment of the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology (IJO) and is on the Editorial Board of BMC Ophthalmology.
She has received several prestigious awards, including the IJO Gold Award in 2019, the IJO Honour Award for Peer Review in 2018, the IJO Silver Award in 2017, the Best Paper Award in APACRS for 2016 and 2017, ARVO Travel Grand in 2017, and the KC Singhal Award for Best Paper in External Disease AIOS in 2017. She was also awarded the International Ophthalmic Hero award by AIOS in 2017 and the Best Cornea Paper by the Karnataka Ophthalmic Society in 2016.
