Dr Taraprasad Das Receives Lifetime Achievement Award at AIOC 2026
Biography
Dr Taraprasad Das is the Professor of Ophthalmology at Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, China, the Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Rochester Medical School, Rochester, NY, USA, and a fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences.
He holds several senior leadership roles across global and national platforms. He serves as Regional Chair for South-East Asia at the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and as President of the Asia Pacific Vitreo-Retinal Society (APVRS).
Dr Das contributes to ophthalmic research and education as Associate Editor of the Asia Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology, a member of the editorial board of Ophthalmic Research, and through roles with the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and the International Council of Ophthalmology’s Ophthalmology Specialty Training (Vitreo retina).
At the national level, he advises on public health policy and ethics as Chairman of the Ethics Committee at the Indian Institute of Public Health, Board Member of VISION 2020 India, and a member of the Government of India’s Advisory Committee for the 13th Five-Year Plan and Task Force on Diabetic Retinopathy. He is also a mentor in the APVRS Leadership Development Program.
He was the former President of All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) and Vitreo Retinal Society of India (VRSI), Chairman of the Program Committee (Retina), Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), and Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology (IJO).
Dr Das has delivered 13 named lectures and has received 24 awards from state and national ophthalmic societies in India. His contributions have also been recognized internationally by the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
He was conferred a Doctorate of Science (Honoris Causa) by Raveshaw University, Cuttack, in 2011 and awarded the fourth-highest civilian honor, Padma Sri, by the Government of India in 2013.
