LVPEI at the 16th National Conference on Cornea and Eye Banking

The 16th National Conference on Cornea and Eye Banking and Annual Convention of the Eye Bank Association of India (EBAI) was held in Kochi from September 4–6, 2026, bringing together professionals working in corneal care and eye banking.

Among the speakers was Dr Sujata Das, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vice-President of EBAI, who delivered a lecture titled ‘National Donor End Graft Registry: Models to Replicate in India.’ Her presentation explored the need for stronger donor registration and a more coordinated pathway from eye donation to corneal transplantation in India.

Today, that journey involves several links — potential donors and their families, eye banks, transplant centres and healthcare professionals. Dr Das’s presentation examined how established registry models could help connect these links more effectively and inform the development of a national framework suited to India.

A coordinated donor-to-graft registry could support better use of available donor tissue, strengthen coordination across the eye-banking ecosystem and help facilitate more timely access to quality donor corneas.

The discussion formed part of wider conversations at the convention on clinical practices, eye donation, transplantation and strengthening eye-bank services in the country. Building scalable and sustainable systems remains important to expanding access to corneal transplantation and addressing avoidable corneal blindness.

Dr Das’s participation contributed to these national conversations, reflecting LVPEI’s continued engagement in collaborative efforts to strengthen eye banking and corneal care in India.
