The L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) serves as a designated referral centre for specialised ophthalmic care for India’s defence personnel. The Kallam Anji Reddy (KAR) campus in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad is empanelled with the Ministry of Defence, enabling active servicemen, ex-servicemen, and their dependants to access the Institute’s full spectrum of eye care services at no cost, under the applicable guidelines.

The nature of service in the armed forces exposes personnel to a distinct and demanding set of ocular health risks. Military hospitals and medical facilities manage routine and primary ophthalmic care effectively within their infrastructure; for cases requiring advanced intervention, LVPEI is the designated referral centre. In addition to clinical services, LVPEI also provides specialised training for ophthalmologists serving within the defence healthcare system, contributing to building clinical capacities.

Honoring our longstanding partnership, earlier this week, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Telangana and Andhra Sub Area (TASA) of the Indian Army, Major General Ajay Misra, undertook a detailed tour of our Quaternary Eye Care Institute to gain an understanding of our clinical capabilities, training programmes, ongoing research and technology innovations. He discussed with senior leaders of LVPEI, the potential to expand existing collaboration across multiple domains, including patient care, professional training, technology adoption, and institutional capacity building.

Both institutions have expressed intent to identify specific areas of collaboration and develop frameworks for their operationalisation in the near term.

The GOC’s visit is expected to pave the way for further dialogue between LVPEI and India’s defence services.
