L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) conducted a specialized Eye Trauma Training Program — a Training of Trainers session — for master trainers at the Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI), which operates India’s 108 Ambulance Services on June 29, 2026 at its Kallam Anji Reddy (KAR) Campus, Hyderabad. This collaboration marks an important step forward in strengthening pre-hospital care for eye injuries.

Eye trauma is one of the leading causes of preventable vision loss, and the care provided in the first few moments after an injury can significantly influence long-term outcomes. Emergency medical systems are built to respond to a wide range of injuries and conditions, often under intense time pressure. And eye trauma, because of its specialized nature, requires specific knowledge and tools that aren’t always part of standard emergency training. As a result, sight-saving interventions in the earliest moments after an injury can be a difficult gap to close, one that requires focused, specialized inputs alongside broader emergency response training.
Acknowledging this critical gap, LVPEI collaborated with EMRI to design a structured program focused on improving the early recognition and management of eye injuries among frontline responders. During the session, EMT trainers were trained to:
- identify vision-threatening eye injuries
- administer appropriate first aid using a standardized Eye Trauma Kit
- avoid harmful practices
- facilitate timely referral to specialized eye care facilities.

This initiative reflects a shared commitment to integrating eye health into the broader emergency medical ecosystem. By working together, LVPEI and EMRI are helping ensure that eye injuries receive the same level of informed, timely attention as other emergencies — improving the odds of preserving vision for patients across communities.
