Restoring Sight — Nirupa’s Journey Through Glaucoma Treatment at LVPEI

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which transmits visual information from the eye to the brain. The gradual damage can lead to vision loss or blindness if untreated. Glaucoma is known as the “sneak thief of sight” because it often progresses without symptoms until late stages. It affects people of all ages but is most common in adults over age 50 and is a leading cause of blindness worldwide.
It is believed that nearly 90% of glaucoma in India is undiagnosed and is believed to account for nearly 5.5% of all blindness in the country. In fact, India may be home to 20% of the world’s glaucoma population.
Glaucoma treatment aims to lower intraocular pressure and prevent further nerve damage. Vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored, but the condition’s progression can be slowed or stopped. In more advanced cases, surgery is a solution. One of the most established surgical options is trabeculectomy — a procedure in which a small drainage channel is created to relieve pressure inside the eye and protect the optic nerve from further damage. It remains a gold-standard intervention for patients whose glaucoma cannot be adequately controlled through medication alone.
At LVPEI, glaucoma management is approached as a long-term partnership between patient and clinician. Our centres combine advanced diagnostics, individualized treatment planning, and structured post-operative follow-up to help patients preserve their vision and quality of life.
My Journey at LVPEI by Nirupa Choudhury
Behind every clinical outcome is a personal journey. Nirupa* Choudhury (*name changed to protect privacy), a social worker and long-time patient under the care of LVPEI’s Dr Avik Kumar Roy, recently underwent glaucoma and trabeculectomy surgery at our institute. She shared the following heartfelt note with our team.
Dear Dr Roy, I am writing to express my heartfelt thanks for the glaucoma and trabeculectomy surgery you performed on my eyes. The procedure was successful, and your skill, calm guidance, and post-operative care made a difficult experience much easier. I am equally grateful for the efficient, compassionate services provided by LV Prasad Eye Institute, both at Bhubaneswar and Berhampur. The institute’s commitment to eye health and eye care is evident in every detail, from diagnosis to recovery.
Beyond patient care, your work in organizing free eye camps, cataract surgeries, and eye donation drives is truly impactful. With expert optometrists and ophthalmology specialists in their respective fields, these initiatives bring vision care to people who need it most. The back-to-back seminars and webinars you conduct for volunteers are equally commendable, they help us gain expertise in field work and make our contributions during camps more effective. Your dedication to education and community service sets a high standard for all of us.
Thank you again, Dr Roy, for restoring my sight and for leading a team that serves with such excellence. I will always be grateful.
LVPEI continues to invest in both individual patient care and community-level outreach. Timely diagnosis, skilled surgical intervention, and sustained follow-up care remain central to helping patients manage conditions like glaucoma — while the Institute’s broader mission continues to bring eye care within reach of communities that need it most.
