On June 1, 1987, L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) opened it’s door to it’s first patient and began it’s journey.

When Dr Gullapalli N Rao and Mrs Pratibha Rao moved back to India from the United States of America (USA), they just had one goal in mind – to create excellent and equitable eye care systems that reach all those in need. Leaving a comfortable life in the USA to come back to India to start something from scratch with your own savings, was not an easy decision. However, nearly four decades later, as that vision continues to guide LVPEI’s journey, it’s clear that the decision was an important one.

This spirit was at the heart of the Patient Care Day celebrations at the Kallam Anji Reddy (KAR) campus in Hyderabad, the Quaternary Institute of Excellence in the LVPEI eye health pyramid on June 1, 2026. Bringing together staff, leadership and well-wishers, the day served as a reflection of the achievements of the past year and to recognize those who made it possible.

The program kicked off with Dr Merle Fernandes, Campus Head, KAR Campus, presenting a review of the work that LVPEI did over the past year, with some significant highlights.

Some of the major developments of the past year were:

  • The inauguration of the YC Mruthyunjaya Cataract Centre, a dedicated eye care facility operated by LVPEI and supported by the Indo-American Eye Care Society.
  • The establishment of the Kalathur Venugopal Reddy Glaucoma Institute at the KAR Campus – an institute dedicated to advancing cutting-edge clinical care, research, and education in Glaucoma.
  • Innovation remained central to LVPEI’s work as the Centre For Technology Innovation (CFTI) at LVPEI achieved a major milestone, with two of its developed technologies — BaViS (Baby Vision Screener) and PupilN (Portable Automated Pupilometer) — officially reaching market-ready status. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Forus Health Private Limited was signed by the institute wherein Forus Health Private Limited will serve as the marketing and production partner for these innovations.

Additionally, three Cornea faculty members were invited to Cornea Specialty Day in new Orleans, reaffirming LVPEI’s global reputation in ophthalmology and eye care.

The celebrations were graced by Prof Bejon Kumar Misra, Consumer Policy Expert as Chief Guest for the occasion. The gathering was also addressed by Dr Prashant Garg, Executive Chair, LVPEI network and Dr Rajeev Reddy, Vice Chair, LVPEI network. A special moment of the evening was the staff recognition ceremony which honored employees for their year-round dedication and service. Mr Vaseem, Senior Assistant, Cornea Diagnostics, and Mr Abdul Aseem, Senior Assistant, Accounts department, were recognized as Employee of the Year by the institution. The awards were jointly presented by Dr Merle Fernandes and Prof Bejon Kumar Misra, with Dr Tarjani Dave concluding the event with a vote of thanks.

Patient Care Day at LVPEI was a reminder of the bigger picture that lied behind every milestone and every achievement. Beyond the achievements and the awards, the day was also a celebration of community and shared purpose – a reminder that institutions aren’t merely systems and infrastrcuture but also the people and the efforts that make a vision come to life.

As LVPEI continues to grow, that vision remains unchanged – to ensure quality eye care is accessible to anyone who needs it.
