Independent living skills
People with vision loss are trained in everyday life skills for greater independence, including orientation and mobility, money identification, home management, personal care and safe use of the environment.
The training begins with an individualised assessment of the person’s functional needs and the challenges they face in everyday life. Based on their age, abilities, lifestyle and goals, practical, hands-on training to develop safe and effective ways of performing daily activities independently is provided.
Training may include orientation and mobility, cane techniques, money identification, needle threading, cooking, home management, personal grooming, clothing and colour identification, organising belongings, handling household tasks and other activities needed for independent living.
Each programme is tailored to the individual, with practical training focused on overcoming specific functional difficulties and building safety, confidence, and independence in real-life situations.
1. Orientation and mobility training
Many people with vision loss have difficulty moving around independently. Our orientation and mobility training offers assessment of movement problems, indoor and outdoor and teaches them skills to navigate independently, safely and gracefully using a mobility cane and sighted guide techniques. Based on the need, people with low vision are suggested to use appropriate non-optical devices such as a peaked cap, tinted glass and flashlight, for better use of vision during travel.
2. Making out money
Techniques to identify different currency notes and coins, using assistive tools such as Note X, smartphone apps or arrangement of currency notes using racks in a wallet are taught.
3. Home management
We have a home management ‘kitchen’ at our facility, where we train persons with vision loss on skills including safe kitchen management, adaptations on materials, and techniques for performing specific tasks, such as cooking, dusting, sweeping, ironing, and needle threading.
4. Personal skills
Self-grooming techniques such as applying make-up, ironing clothes, shaving, organizing dresses by colour, filing records and identifying food items etc. are taught under personal skill development.
